Global Shapers are young leaders who want to develop their leadership potential towards serving society. They work together in teams to improve their communities. This special series highlights the winners of Coca-Cola’s Shaping a Better Future Grant Challenge for the Global Shapers Community. This challenge rewards taking action, leading positive change and using innovative approaches to tackle serious social issues.

The Coca-Cola Company is a founding partner of this World Economic Forum Community. We think the Shapers are pretty awesome and hope you enjoy seeing the change they are starting in their own backyards.

What do you have to do with politics?

To many young people all around Brazil, the answer to this question is very disturbing. Lack of interest and understanding is the general and unfortunate norm, making civic engagement in political matters the bright but rare exception.

Why is that so? Well, one of the main reasons is simply that politics is boring, dull and pretty hard to understand. But, the question is: does it have to be like that? We strongly believe that it doesn’t. Motivated by this belief, the ten Global Shapers Hubs of Brazil engaged in a joint initiative to develop Politize! Check it out here.

Politize! is an educational platform where Brazilians will find high quality knowledge about the importance of being a politically engaged civilian. Our goal is to fill a major gap in Brazil´s educational system, using technology to make politics fun and easy to learn. All the contents will be free, seeking to give access to this fundamental good, the knowledge about our political system.

We will provide a set of content in popular, fun media formats, such as infographics, videos, short texts, and cool, interactive digital experiences. The user will be able to surf freely while also following a guided learning track. This way, users can gain a deeper understanding about different subjects, accessing more complex contents as they progress through the course work.

Politize! doesn´t align with any party or political philosophy. Our intent is not to convince, but rather, to give the user information to develop one’s own convictions and make sound judgments. The maintenance of the platform will be managed by a cohort of Global Shapers across Brazil. Additionally, if any users are dissatisfied with the platform, they can make their opinion public on the website, reinforcing a fundamental value to any democracy: transparency.

The Coca-Cola Shaping a Better Future Grant will help us expand our previous work developing small political education sessions with groups of young citizens, making our platform more interactive. All the development will be open source, with the goal of people from around the world creating their own “Politize!” platforms. In this way, we hope to make a global impact on civic education.
