Our next happy-themed playlist on Spotify comes courtesy of US singer-songwriter Brett Dennen.

Born and raised in North California, Brett's hometown and roots were the source of inspiration behind his most recent studio album ‘Smoke N Mirrors’ which is his fifth record and was released in October last year.

We caught up with the man himself for a quick chat despite his busy schedule, having spent most of 2014 so far on the road.

Read our interview and check out the video for ‘Out Of My Head Summer Mix’ below.

1. Your last album ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ was released back in October 2013. You said in an interview that you thought some of the songs on it would wind up being fans favorites. What has the response been so far?

The response has been overwhelmingly positive.  People are singing every word at the shows and dancing.  Wild Child, When We Were Young, and Out of My Head in particular are quickly becoming fan favorites.

2. You’ve played a lot of gigs, including opening for John Mayer. Has there ever been a gig that’s really stood out to you as a special one and what made it so special?

I’ve been on so many great tours and played so many amazing shows.  The tour I’m on right now, The Soulshine Tour is not like any tour out there.  It’s a music and yoga tour with four great bands including Michael Franti and Spearhead, Soja, and Trevor Hall.  People come to the concert with their yoga mats and get a yoga class, then they get to see four really great bands.  There are a couple of non-profit organizations out on tour with us as well.  It’s not just a tour.  It’s an inspired community on the road.

3. Your playlist is filled with old classics! Talk us though the songs on your playlist and why you chose them...

I love old music. I just chose songs with one thing in mind, they have to be songs that make me happy. Songs that put a smile to my face and may even move me to dance.

4. We believe that happiness is better shared; please can you pick a song from your playlist and tell us who you’d like to share it with?

I’d like to share Say A Little Prayer with my girlfriend.  It’s a perfect song.  It captures just how good it feels to love someone.

5. Lastly, you already have an impressive 5 albums under your belt. What’s the future looking like for you now and how many more can we expect form you?

There is still a long road ahead.  I hope to continue touring and putting out albums into my old age.  I look forward to all the changes that music will take me through.  I am excited about learning and growing as an artist and diving deeper into the source from which I share my music.  I feel like I have a long way to go.
