For more than 125 years, The Coca-Cola Company given people around the world something positive to hope for with every sip. Here at Coca-Cola, we are committed to making a difference in everything we do, and that includes finding innovative ways to better mitigate the carbon emissions of our system’s operations.
As climate change continues to challenge our planet and threaten the livelihood of existing species, we believe our role in actively seeking solutions is more important than ever. Our 2020 climate protection goal aims to improve Coca-Cola’s energy efficiency and reduce our environmental impact from the products we make and sell to the refrigeration equipment we use and the ways we deliver our beverages.
By 2020, our goal is to reduce the carbon footprint embedded in the ‘drink in your hand’ by 25%. What does this really mean? It means reducing the carbon emissions (or CO2, also called greenhouse gases) across everything you touch and taste, from the bottle to our beverage ingredients and the parts in-between (we call it our value chain).
Our mission doesn’t stop there. Our reduction goal will help prevent an estimated 20 million metric tons of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere. That’s equivalent to 3.8 million cars off the road a year. Additionally, we will continue to increase our use of PlantBottle™ packaging, a fully recyclable PET plastic bottle made with up to 30% plant-based materials, which will continue to lower our petroleum footprint. In fact, by 2020, we plan to use PlantBottle™ packaging for all of our PET plastic bottles.
The science on climate change is becoming increasingly settled, and we recognize that humans play a crucial role in addressing this environmental challenge. Coca-Cola is working to do our part. With our new 2020 goals in place, we have confidence that our Company will continue to make strides in preventing CO2 emissions and helping to protect the planet’s resources. As a responsible multinational company, we have a role to play in ensuring we use the best possible mix of energy resources, improve the energy efficiency of our manufacturing processes and reduce the potential climate impact of the products we sell. These are steps that make good sense for the environment as well as our business.
We invite you to learn more about our energy and climate initiatives in our most recent Sustainability Report.
