Today, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reaffirmed the safety of aspartame after completing a full-risk assessment on the ingredient as part of an on-going, broad-reaching program that it is undertaking to re-evaluate all approved food additives used in the European Union by 2020. In total, EFSA reviewed more than 2,000 studies and datasets before making its determination.
According to EFSA’s ruling, aspartame is safe for human consumption at current levels of exposure, there is no potential risk of aspartame causing damage to genes and inducing cancer and there is no risk to the developing fetus from exposure to phenylalanine derived from aspartame at the current ADI. The only exception, as is already well-known, is for people who have the rare genetic disorder Phenylketonuria (PKU) and cannot metabolize phenylalanine and therefore should avoid aspartame.
