International Coastal Cleanup Initiative Planned In MalaysiaSeptember 8, 2006 editionMalaysian volunteers will participate in the 21st International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) in Teluk Kemang, Port Dickson, on the morning of September 17. The initiative has been organized and sponsored by The Body Shop annually since 1992, with the support of The annual ICC is one of the largest volunteer events around the world for marine environment causes. Each year, on the third weekend of September, volunteers descend on beaches, lakes and streams around the world to clean up trash and debris. Last year, more than 450,000 volunteers worldwide removed 8.2m pounds of debris from 18,000 miles of coasts, spanning 74 different nations. The ICC isn't about just picking up trash and debris. Volunteers also collect information on the items they find and pass on the data to The Ocean Conservancy for analysis. The collected data, which includes figures from 1986 to 2005, is the most accurate record of marine debris currently available. It also provides an insight into the causes and sources of marine debris and helps educate the public on prevention methods and solutions. Last year's ICC in Malaysia took place in Danga Bay, Johor Bahru, where more than 200 volunteers collected 1.26 tons of trash from the beach. The Company has been a partner of the ICC for 11 years as part of its Global Water Stewardship initiative, which is committed to preserving and protecting water resources, community by community, in countries where the Company operates. |
