To reduce CO2 emissions of "the drink in your hand" by 25 percent, Coca-Cola is working to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain, making comprehensive carbon footprint reductions across manufacturing processes, packaging formats, delivery fleet, refrigeration equipment and ingredient sourcing.
Collaborating to Curb Emissions
While Coca-Cola is dedicated to curbing our own emissions, we’re also committed to encouraging others to do so as well. No one company, organization, or government is going to shift the trajectory of climate change on its own. Significant and positive impact will require business, civil society and governments all working toward a healthier planet, and often in partnership.
For many years, Coca-Cola has played an active role in the United Nations’ Conference of the Parties (COP) and other meetings focused on climate change. Our involvement continued in 2015 at COP21 in Paris, where business had a strong and powerful presence. Leading up to COP21, the private sector united on several initiatives, calling for a climate agreement that would support our interests and efforts toward a low-carbon economy. And, we were able to welcome the Paris Agreement.
Our Chief Sustainability Officer, Bea Perez, participated in the Sustainable Innovation Forum, a two-day business-focused event held during COP21, where she talked about the importance of water and agriculture in climate programs, and participated in a panel to discuss sustainable supply chain innovation and the circular economy.
Leading up to, during and following COP21, The Coca-Cola Company published articles covering topics across our business related to climate and provided updates of our participation in events connected to the climate negotiations. Read those articles here.
Our sustainability leadership was recognized in June 2014, when we received the Keystone Policy Center’s Environmental Leadership Award in recognition of our leadership in water, climate, packaging and agriculture. This was only the second time a corporation has won in the 20-year history of this award.
Moving Forward as the Evidence Mounts
Communities around the world are already confronting the effects of climate change, including drought, flooding, storms, wildfires and record high temperatures.
In 2016, we will continue developing the metrics and governance processes for measuring our progress toward our "drink in your hand" carbon goal, while working to reduce our carbon footprint.
