Some of our packaging recycling programs

  • Nigeria PET recycling: In 2005, Coca-Cola, in collaboration with Alkem Nigeria Limited, a fiber processing manufacturer, initiated a buyback and recycling scheme for used PET bottles, regardless of source or brand. Together, the partners launched Nigeria’s first bottles-to-fiber recycling operation. Coca-Cola is the only player in the beverage sector that is investing in this initiative and was joined in 2009 by its bottling partner, Nigerian Bottling Company Limited. Since 2005, the volume of bottles that are recycled through the program has grown from 135 tons in 2005 to 6,200 tons in 2012. And, the initiative has help create jobs for an estimated 1,500 people.
  • Recycling for the Future: Coca-Cola Enterprises, our bottler in Western Europe, has begun a ground-breaking study with 20 households in Great Britain and France to observe at-home recycling behaviors over a six-month period. The goal of the study is to explore solutions that can influence and help increase at-home recycling rates. The findings will be announced at CCE’s Sustainability Innovation Summit in October 2013.
  • Future Centre Trust:  Future Centre Trust (FCT) is a Non-Governmental Organization that focuses on environmental education and encourages responsible management of sustainable resources in Barbados. With funding from The Coca-Cola Foundation, FCT successfully executed the CoRe NETWORK Community Recycling Centre Project, as part of a project to build and operate community based recycling centers. FCT used the grant to construct nine new CoRe NETWORK Recycling Collection Centres located in various community ‘hubs’ across the island, including schools and residential areas. The project assisted local communities in a variety of ways including raising public awareness of the impacts of global climate change to their communities, providing education on the benefits and methods of recycling in the local community and reducing the impacts of increased flooding and potential soil erosion on coastal communities.
  • Don't Waste. Create: In partnership with Sainsbury’s, a grocery chain in Great Britain, Coca-Cola Enterprises launched a campaign to encourage consumers to re-use their plastic bottles at home in a fun and useful way.  The program encourages parents to sign up and ‘pledge’ to recycle, and provides a website where they and their families can learn creative ways to re-use plastic beverage packaging, from making bird feeders to creating a self-watering plastic bottle plant pot. Once the activities are completed, families are encouraged to recycle the plastic bottles. The program informs and encourages participants on the importance of recycling used beverage containers.
  • IMER: With an investment of $20 million, Coca-Cola FEMSA, Coca-Cola de México and bottle supplier ALPLA joined forces to build the first PET recycling plant in Latin America, called Industria Mexicana de Reciclaje (IMER). The plant has a processing capacity of 25,000 tons annually, which will triple the amount currently recycled in Mexico. The process yields food-grade resin for the production of new bottles.
  • Coletivo Recycling: In Brazil, Coletivo Recycling helps recycling cooperatives become self-sustaining businesses by providing investment in materials, infrastructure and life skills training. Coletivo Recycling is active in 330 communities across 22 states in Brazil, and has 10,000 cooperative members, whose incomes have increased by 17 percent since 2002 with the program’s guidance. In addition to increased productivity, the program elevates self-esteem due to improved work conditions, and instills a sense of dignity and honor associated with the profession.
  • Together We Are Making Recycling Count:  Coca‑Cola Enterprises (CCE) and Tesco joined forces this summer in Great Britain to encourage customers to recycle more at home and to educate them on how they can help reduce the national carbon footprint. The online campaign targeted Tesco Clubcard customers and asked them to 'pledge' to recycle. For participating, customers can choose between a 50p off voucher for Coca‑Cola, Diet Coke or Coke Zero or 25 additional Tesco Clubcard points. A campaign website was set up to show the total number of pledges received during the six week long activity, as well as the equivalent tonnage of waste recycled, so that everyone visiting will be able to see the size of their contribution.
  • Everybody begins to protect their environment: A rewarding recycling program in China. Coca-Cola often partners on initiatives with our key retail partners. In China, we worked with Wal-Mart and China Resources Vanguard Supermarket, to launch environmental campaigns in order to fully leverage their access to large numbers of consumers. In June 2011, together with China resources Vanguard Supermarket in Hangzhou we launched a three-monthPET bottle recycling program called “Everybody Begins to Protect Their Environment in Daily Life.” Consumers could send a used plastic Coca-Cola bottle to any Vanguard store, participate in trade-in deals and take part in various games, such as a creative craftsmanship contest on environmental protection, raising their environmental awareness.

  • Coca-Cola Norway Invests in Recycling: Having made the switch to PlantBottle packaging, Coca-Cola Norway is now turning its sights on expanding the local recycling infrastructure. “Currently we ship PET bottles abroad for recycling, but now we have signed a letter of intent with a supplier of recycling solutions that will eventually lead to establishing a Norwegian-based recycling facility,” says Kjell Olav Maldum, managing director of Norsk Resirk, the company that operates the collection and deposit system for cans and non-refillable plastic bottles in Norway. “[Coca-Cola Enterprises Norway’s] transition will enable the establishment of a new Norwegian recycling facility, and the recycling operations are expected to be operative by the second quarter of 2014.”
