This week, while all eyes are on the Big Game rivalry between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos, another competition between two cities comes to an end.
Roughly a year ago, The American Beverage Association (ABA) Foundation announced a $5 million “wellness challenge” between Chicago and San Antonio. The grant helped encourage municipal employees of both cities to participate in their local wellness programs. And after a solid fight, Chicago has been named the winner based on independently certified results.
The “Chicago Lives Healthy” program brought biometric screenings to the forefront, helping 91 percent of Chicago city employees complete a screening. The win was not an easy feat, with 57 percent of San Antonio city employees participating – surpassing the city’s previous 20 percent participation rate.
While the scores have been tallied and the winner has been crowned, the rivalry continues. Chicago and San Antonio will move forward implementing innovative programs that arm city employees with choices and information so they can make the right decisions for themselves and their families. Specifically, Chicago will receive $2.5 million to extend its screenings, provide blood pressure training and develop additional wellness education programs and materials. The City of San Antonio will receive $1.5 million to develop additional programs and enhance and maintain its fitness facility.
Overall, this innovative competition reinforced
what we know to be true: when we work together, real progress happens. As both cities continue on the path to better
health, The Coca-Cola Company is honored to sponsor these local programs that
contribute to healthier communities.
