ATLANTA – Coca-Cola celebrated its 130th birthday today near the location where its flagship beverage was first served on May 8, 1886 by thanking its hometown with a $1.8 million grant to improve support improvements in and around downtown Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park District. Coca-Cola Chairman and CEO Muhtar Kent announced the grant alongside Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed at a celebration hosted at the intersection of Peachtree and Marietta streets.
As CEO of the Atlanta History Center and a proud native Atlantan, I often reflect on our city’s historic moments. This week marks the 130th anniversary of the first Coca-Cola ever served, which took place downtown at 2 Marietta Street, so it’s a significant week of reflection for me – and should be for all Atlantans.

In my 19 years in the Coca-Cola Archives, I must have said the line: “Coca-Cola was first served on May 8, 1886 at Jacobs’ Pharmacy” thousands of times as I have discussed the history of the drink.
