Is it true that Coca‑Cola started as a medicine?

Coca‑Cola didn't start as a medicine. It was invented by doctor and pharmacist, Dr John S Pemberton, in May 1886 in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Pemberton produced the syrup for Coca-Cola, and carried a jug of the new product down the street to Jacobs' Pharmacy, where it was sampled, pronounced "excellent" and placed on sale for five cents a glass as a soda fountain drink.
