It may be no surprise to learn that American’s waistlines have been steadily expanding in recent decades - more than 35 percent of Americans are obese, and 70 percent are overweight. Obesity is a complex issue, and no one can solve it alone.
I am proud to serve as President of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF), a CEO-led organization designed to help reduce obesity–especially childhood obesity–by 2015. It’s a first-of-its kind coalition that brings together 16 food and beverage corporate partners, and more than 230 retailers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and professional sports organizations. It is by far the most comprehensive and serious anti-obesity effort ever developed by food and beverage manufacturers.
In May 2010, our 16 manufacturer partners committed to reduce 1.5 trillion calories in the marketplace by 2015. We worked towards this goal by providing consumers with new lower- and zero-calorie options, changing recipes where possible to lower the calorie content of current products, or reducing portion sizes of existing single-serve products.
Today we are announcing that our corporate partners have reduced 1.5 trillion calories from the marketplace three years ahead of schedule. We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment. Clearly, consumers are responding to lower- calorie options in the grocery store.
In addition to our commitment to reduce calories, we continue to work with families and schools through our Together Counts ™ campaign, which provides tips, tools and lesson plans to teachers and parents alike.
