Ryan Seacrest could arguably be one of the most well-known broadcasters of our time.  Whether he’s hosting American Idol, giving his voice to radio’s daily top 40, producing reality shows, ringing in the New Year in Times Square, or spending time giving back through his Ryan Seacrest Foundation, the Emmy award-winning announcer is almost always on the go.

We were fortunate to sit down with the Georgia native to ask him about his trip to the tundra and talk about his involvement with Coca-Cola and the World Wildlife Fund’s Arctic Home project.  This is Seacrest’s second year being involved with the program, which spreads awareness and raises money for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to preserve polar bear habitats throughout the Arctic. 

You have one of the most recognizable voices in the business. Why did you decide to lend your voice to Arctic Home… and helping polar bears that have no voice? 

Thank you for saying that! In 2011 Coke came and asked me to be a part of the campaign. They educated me about the plight of polar bears, and I jumped at the chance to get involved in raising awareness about this important issue. I firmly believe that if there is a problem, and you can do something about it, then you should help.

You traveled to Churchill, Manitoba, to see WWF’s conservation work in action. What was the most memorable part of your trip?

It was such an amazing experience. I remember getting off the plane, and thinking two things – the first, that it was freezing and the second, that is such a serene and magical place. 

What have you learned through your participation in this campaign that you think others would be surprised to know?

Polar bears are obsessive about keeping clean. After they eat, they will spend 15-20 minutes grooming themselves, making sure there is no dirt or residue left on them that may interfere with the insulating properties of their fur.    

Why do you think people should care about polar bears they will never come in touch with that live hundreds of miles away?

The Arctic, a natural treasure, is under severe threat from climate change. And, polar bears, they are at the top of the food chain, have an important role in the overall health of the marine environment which impacts all of us.

What do you hope Coca-Cola is able to accomplish through the Arctic Home campaign?  

Coca-Cola and the WWF are working to protect the Arctic to protect polar bears, working to raise widespread awareness and funds to help protect the polar bear and its habitat.

Why do you think the collaboration between WWF and Coca-Cola been especially effective?

WWF is widely recognized as one of the most effective and most respected environmental organizations and Coca-Cola has the voice, marketing power and resources to drive massive awareness and funding for WWF’s polar bear conservation efforts.

How did a native Georgian and current California resident cope with the frigid temperatures there?

Lots of well-insulated down-filled gear!

Growing up in Dunwoody, Georgia, did you have any past affinity for Coke prior to becoming a  broadcaster?

Yes, definitely. Coca-Cola is so prevalent in the fabric of the Atlanta community — they are like an old, cherished friend to me.
