One of the most fascinating things about holidays is the unique ways they are celebrated in different cultures and by different people. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration that instantly brings about thoughts of vibrant colors, festive drinks, indulgent food and, of course, parties! Festivities for Cinco de Mayo are quite popular in the western United States and especially so in cities closest to the Mexican border like San Diego, Calif., and San Antonio, Texas. Ironically, the holiday isn’t widely recognized in Mexico. However, many other cultures around the world have used the 5th of May as a day to honor and celebrate Mexican heritage and pride.
Japan holds a two-day event featuring musical performances, folklorico dancing and fusion foods on May 3-4 that not only highlights Mexican culture but all Latin cultures in the Americas.
In the Cayman Islands, Cinco de Mayo brings about the island’s annual air-guitar competition, with patrons toasting each other with live music and beer.
In Canada, the city of Toronto hosts a “guacamole smackdown” at the Drake Hotel featuring fierce competition from some of the city’s top chefs, while Vancouver throws a large outdoor party with air shows and tandem skydiving.
Stateside, Los Angeles and New York City hold massive full-day parades and street fairs.
In Puebla, Mexico, people dress up and reenact the 1862 battle that inspired the holiday…don’t worry, only fruit is used as ammunition!
No matter where you are celebrating, here are three unique drinks that are perfect for any Cinco de Mayo fiesta.
