Coke Scholars at Kirkwood Community
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Scholars Weekend was an experience that no other scholarship or academic program can match, as it brought together 252 like-minded students who are incredibly intelligent, motivated, and dedicated to making a difference in their communities. We joined a prestigious family more valuable than any sum of money could provide. And, we made memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

At the banquet, I had the opportunity to stand next to my new friends in front of hundreds of supportive sponsors, Coca-Cola employees, including CEO Muhtar Kent, and our incredible guest speaker and world-renowned journalist, Tom Brokow. Nonetheless, out of all of the activities the Scholars participated in, my favorite was our environmental service project at the Kirkwood Community Forest.

My passion for the environment began four years ago when a devastating rainfall flooded my home and my community. On April 16, 2012, I was invited to attend the White House Summit on Environmental Education where I was awarded the President’s Environmental Youth Award . Needless to say, the reason I received the award is much more important than the award itself. I have continued to bring awareness of the world’s water crisis through two environmental research projects and as United States Miss Teen Eco 2012 and Miss Teen Earth Pennsylvania 2012. In June, I report to the United States Naval Academy where I plan to study Ocean Engineering. I one day hope to impact our nation through addressing the world water crisis, a cause Coca-Cola is extremely passionate about and supports through their Environmental Stewardship Program. During Scholars Weekend, I was honored to be selected as the 2013 Lenovo Green Ambassador.

Volunteering at the Kirkwood Community Forest, the other Scholars and I helped in the first stages of establishing a beautiful community center. While raking and refertilizing the soil, I admired the entire field of scholars who looked to be enjoying their experience as much as I was, a moment that truly meant a lot to me.  It was at Kirkwood where, working side-by-side and discussing our ideas with one another, we became a team.

Each and every one of the four days I spent in Atlanta are ones I will never forget. Thank you to the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for this incredible experience and for creating a community of alumni who have and will continue to have an influence on my life. Finally, thank you to my fellow Coca-Cola Scholars for inspiring me through their amazing passions and achievements. The famous Coca-Cola saying goes, “Buy someone you love a Coke,” and if I could, I would buy 251, one for each amazing Scholar I met!
