Coca-Cola has retained the No. 4 spot on Fortune’s annual ranking of the World’s 50 Most Admired Companies.
The company has made steady progress on what is widely considered to be the definitive report card on corporate reputation, climbing 20 spots between 2007 (No. 24) and 2012 (No. 4). Fortune credits our expanding portfolio and growth prospects in its 2013 report.
Geoff Colvin, Fortune Senior Editor at Large, made this prediction about Coke’s staying power in the rankings: “Here's another way to get at the deep lessons of the Most Admired: Make your best prediction of which companies among today's top 10 will appear in the top 10 list 30 years from now, in 2043. My guesses, for what they're worth: Coke because of brand power among growing middle classes in hot climates; IBM because it's actually a leadership development company, not an infotech company; and Disney, perhaps, because of brand brilliance and favorable demographic trends.”
The Fortune Most Admired ranking starts with approximately 1,400 companies, including U.S. companies in the Fortune 1000, companies outside the U.S. with revenue of $10 billion or more, and top foreign companies operating in the U.S. These companies are sorted by industry, with the largest 15 selected for each international industry and the largest 10 for each U.S. industry. From this group, 687 companies from 30 countries were directly surveyed.
Executives, directors and analysts rated companies in their respective industries on nine criteria, from investment value to social responsibility. Respondents then selected the 10 companies they admired most, from a list made up of the companies that ranked in the top 25 percent in last year’s survey, plus those that finished in the top 20 percent of their industry.
