School is almost in session, but there’s still time to fit one more fun summer activity in before the bell rings. To help get everyone excited for another year, our friends at Target and Latin home décor expert Martin Amado share A+ ideas for repurposing old (or using new!) school supplies in crafty, creative ways.

No surprise here — the makeover maestro has been creating masterpieces for more than nine years. Martin brought his signature keen eye for design and savvy-shopping skills to Target to create these décor DIYs, using classic school supplies such as backpacks, crayons, rubber bands, books and more.

They’re as easy as A, B, C, and your kids will love the academic additions to their rooms! Try one out and let us know what you think in the comments below. Perhaps they’ll even inspire some study sessions (a parent can dream).

Creative way to recycle crayons and pencils into functional decor

Target DIY

What You’ll Need:What You’ll Do:
  1. Wrap a continuous strip of double-sided, foam mounting tape around a tin can. For better surface adhesion, place continuous tape strips near the top and bottom edge of the can.
  2. Place the crayons close together onto the double-sided, foam mounting tape covering the entire circumference in a vertical manner.
  3. Create a fun border stacking colorful rubber bands around the base, which secures the crayons.
  4. This same idea can be used with pencils around a taller cylinder to create a unique vase!

Create a fun textbook cover out of gift-wrapping paper in your favorite pattern

Target DIY

What You’ll Need:
What You’ll Do:
  1. Measure the length and height of the open book and cut the wrapping paper four inches wider than the dimensions. Turn the paper pattern-side down and fold back four inches all around the edge. Cover the textbook in the new sleeve.
  2. Spray paint L-brackets and screws in the same color as the wall to make them blend with decor. Or leave in metal finish if you prefer an industrial look.
  3. Secure L-brackets to the edge of book and attach to wall with screws making sure they’re level. Display and decorate with your favorite things! Change the look of the shelves at any moment by switching out the cover.

Add more storage and organization in your bedroom by recycling a book bag

Target DIY

What You’ll Need:What You’ll Do:
  1. Cut a piece of plywood to fit the interior dimensions of the book bag to create a sturdier backing. The majority of home improvement stores can cut this for you.
  2. Insert plywood backing inside the last pocket of the book bag and secure to the wall by using screws and finishing washers directly through the plywood. You also have the option of removing the straps of the book bag to achieve a flatter surface before attaching to the wall.
  3. Perfect to organize your sports equipment, toys, books and so much more!
