In your own words, what do you do?
I’m a blogger, and that includes a lot of social media. This summer I launched a party store, which came from the fact that I’m obsessed with party supplies. Oh Happy Day is basically an online magazine… we provide and come up with party ideas and photo shoots to give people entertaining ideas and tips on how to celebrate their lives.
Is it an online store only? Or is there a brick and mortar store as well?
Right now we’re online, but are opening a brick and mortar store this fall here in San Francisco. We’re still looking at the details, but yes, a brick and mortar store is in the works.
How did you get really interested in party supplies?
I love traveling. I’m an avid traveler and try going on at least one big trip a year. And the first place I stop whenever I travel is a party store. I love party supplies. They’re usually not expensive, not luxury items or anything. Every country has their own specific things, and I think they’re so simple and so beautiful. For example, I have vintage lanterns from the Paris Flea Market, and I have amazing confetti from all over the world. I have beautiful street flags from Brazil. So everywhere I go, I collect things.
I’ve been a fan of party supplies since my early 20s. I used to be an event planner and have always loved parties. So I started doing the blog and realized people really responded to a party or project I did. At the time, no one was making a living off of blogging online, so over the last 10 years, it has fully progressed and turned into a thing where advertisers want to work with us on collaborations.
How has your style evolved over time?
My style has definitely evolved. I love the classics. I love a good red lipstick, I love a good trenchcoat. I’m always drawn to a classic style but part of our job is to be current on trends. We always have to keep our eyes on the next big thing. I would say we’re half classic and half trend oriented. If you’re too classical, it can be very boring. If you’re too trendy, you can feel dated. You can look back at pictures from a year ago and think, “Ugh, I’m so over that.” For example… the chevron pattern, which was huge a couple of years ago, if you look back at it now, you cringe at it – it’s so dated. But at the time, it felt so fresh and current.
I’m on your site right now and am looking at the interior bedroom makeover. Is that your actual house? I love your bedroom. I have total bedroom envy right now, I love that you painted the bedroom black!
Yes, it’s funny – I’ve lived in small apartments throughout my whole adult life for 15 years. So we finally bought a house last year and I finally have total freedom to paint whatever color I like. I finally got the chance to do something cool. The bedroom was my one space where I could do whatever I want. So I painted it all black, window frames and all. It feels very cozy.
That’s awesome. I’m really digging it. So, how did you get into Pinterest?
I was a fairly early adopter of Pinterest. I met the founder in its very early days. I started my Pinterest back when you had to get an invitation for the site. It’s a visual bookmark. It’s a good way to visually bookmark good ideas that you have. I remember feeling like, “Ugh my links aren’t organized”, but Pinterest makes it so easy.
You have a large number of followers on Pinterest. Do you have any method to the madness? Are you pins well thought out, or is it whatever catches your eye?
I try and pin with a gut reaction – I pin what brings me joy and what makes me happy. I also think there are definitely times when my style is a little bit out there so I lose followers when I do something a little different and crazy.
How would you describe your personal pinning style?
Definitely the party pin board is my favorite. Photo booth backdrops are really cool too. I love to get inspired by window displays for parties. I have this special place in my heart for vintage cars, too. I own a vintage Fiat 500. So I love to look on the Internet for cars I want to buy no matter how impractical they are.
How do you find inspiration?
We try and go out into real life – whether looking through vintage books or thrift stores. Thrift stores are great because everything is mish-mashed together and you can really see inspiration in unexpected ways. You can find inspiration out of raw materials.
You've teamed up with
The concept was that we wanted to do a fall picnic. We came up with ideas for a really classic, quintessential picnic using vintage crates and using classic coke bottles. We used Crissy Field down by the Golden Gate Bridge for our backdrop. It’s very classic. My team styled and shot the photos ourselves. It was a beautiful day and everything turned out so well. It was so cute.
What’s your favorite part about owning your own business?
I love that I can come up with ideas and see them to fruition. It’s really fun and exciting. I remember when I had a boss and I’d have all of these ideas inside of you and they’d let you do it to a point but it would have to evolve and modify and change. Now my ideas come to fruition exactly how I first see them.
Did you go to school to be a business owner?
Nope – I was an English major. I always knew I wanted to be an event planner. It evolved from me doing it part time at night and slowly it grew into a business. Four years ago I started doing it full-time. We now have offices and five employees and are officially a small business.
What has happened in the past that hasn’t turned out well?
Since blogging was new back in the day, I was sort of figuring everything out on my own. There was no way to look at others who came before me and see how they were doing and making decisions. For my company, it was always about content, and in the very beginning, I tried running my blog like a magazine creating teams and new content all the time. But it was extremely time consuming and extremely expensive and stressful. The content was GREAT but it just wasn’t self-sustaining. I tried it for six months but it didn’t work. When you take risk, you try it for 4 or 5 months but if it doesn’t work, you have to pivot and figure out a new plan.
I’m a big fan of Oprah. I love her. I would ask her what I should do with my life… just kidding! But I would do anything she does. And it would be a classic Coke because that’s my style.
