Goal: Manage our distribution fleet to incorporate more fuel-efficient modes of product delivery.

We are working to increase the fuel efficiency of the system's fleet of more than 200,000 vehicles used to deliver our products around the world. Some examples include:

  • Testing 30 compact, electric-powered trucks for our sales force in Uruguay; new model averages one-fifth the fuel consumption of the earlier model;
  • Powering delivery truck in Mexico with diesel and electricity; these new trucks are 30 percent more efficient than trucks previously employed reducing CO 2 emissions by 40 percent; and
  • Updating all 85 diesel fuel delivery trucks in New Delhi, India to be powered by compressed natural gas.

Optimizing delivery routes to minimize stops and fuel usage, and "lightweighted" packaging are two more ways we're reducing the fuel necessary for transporting our products to market.

More than 200,000 of our signature red delivery trucks represent our system around the world. We want them to represent sustainable-oriented transport as well. So we are powering our fleet with a mix of efficient fuels --including electricity, natural gas, diesel-electric hybrids and biodiesel, along with conventional fuels -- and we are exploring new options as they become available. We operate the largest hybrid electric fleet in North America. It consists of more than 700 trucks that use about 30 percent less fuel than conventional diesels and could potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 30 percent -- more than 1 million metric tons annually.
