Coca-Cola is committed to responsible water stewardship everywhere we operate.
In some parts of the world where water is acutely stressed, we have encountered opposition to our operations due to misperceptions about water pollution or water depletion at the detriment of communities. Both of which are in direct violation of
Coca-Cola has faced such water-related challenges in India – a country experiencing increased groundwater depletion in some regions.
We believe, and have experienced, that when all water users – government, civil society and the private sector – work together, sustainable water use can be achieved. We continue to advance our water stewardship practices globally, with significant efforts underway in India. As a system, we have programs, policies, procedures and metrics in place to ensure we continue to improve our water efficiency, meet strict wastewater treatment standards, evaluate the vulnerability and viability of water sources, and replenish the water we use back to communities.
In India, our local bottling plants are continuously working to identify opportunities to reduce consumption and recycle and reuse water. We are also partnering with NGOs, the government, other industries, farmers and local communities, along with our bottling partners, to establish and maintain water programs that replenish the equivalent amount of (or more than) the water we use annually. As a result of these efforts,
Our water replenish projects are designed to address water needs in priority areas and improve local water conditions. Efforts to replenish groundwater in India are focused on rainwater harvesting, groundwater aquifer recharge, constructing check dams, restoring ponds and other natural bodies of water, and supporting agricultural improvements.
We’ve learned a great deal from the public challenges we've faced in India and other areas of water stress where we operate. A lot of our learning has positively influenced the way we approach responsible water stewardship today, in India and elsewhere.
Over the past decade, we have invested more than $2 billion in our plants and programs to enhance our water stewardship globally, and we’ve made systematic changes to our operations. We’ve put routine and rigorous practices in place to monitor and measure performance internally and by trusted, independent third parties. And we remain committed to working across all facets of our business and across sectors toward equitable solutions to water challenges in India and beyond.
