March 20th marks the official International Day of Happiness. To celebrate, we asked a host of artists to tell us which songs make them feel especially happy. Follow the
First up is London band Theme Park. The three-piece group, originally formed by twin brothers Miles and Marcus Haughton, released their self-titled debut in 2013 and have spent most of the last year traveling the globe, playing shows and a handful of festival dates.
We caught up with frontman Marcus, who talked us through their selection of songs.
For people who don’t know Theme Park, how would you describe your music?
Theme Park is an alternative band who play dance-y joyous pop songs.
What’s the happiest song you’ve ever written?
Although we love our music to evoke emotions of happiness and excitement, when you look a bit deeper, there is quite a lot of regret and melancholy in our music. However, the happiest at first glance would be “Milk,” one of our first singles.
You’ve been successful enough to tour around the world, what’s your favorite-ever gig?
Ahh ,there have been so many! One of my personal highlights was closing Ibiza rocks festival with Two Door Cinema Club. Ibiza is such a mystical happy place where literally everyone is super happy all the time! It seemed like the perfect place and crowd for us to play to. We also got to hang out at Freddy Mercury's old villa after the show, which was a bonus.
Tell us about the tracks on your playlist and why you chose them?
I picked the tracks on my playlist because they make me really happy. They aren't all necessarily “happy” songs…. but what is a happy song!? Sometimes the most major songs in the world were written in states of deep sadness and vice-versa for “minor” songs! So my criteria for picking was whether I would put the song on if I was in a happy mood already or if I was feeling down and wanted a lift!
We think happiness is better when it’s shared. Can you pick a song and tell us who you’d want to share it with?
I'd like to pick “Downed Economy” by Emil and Friends and share it with Rosamund Hanson!
What does 2014 have in store for Theme Park?
We're writing and recording our second record at the moment. So we're keeping quite a low profile on the gigging front. Hopefully we'll be finished after the summer though and we can start touring again!
