Alex and Maia Shibutani, affectionately known as the “Shib Sibs” are officially heading to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang. After two exciting performances at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose, Calif. this weekend, the brother-sister ice dancing duo earned a silver medal and a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
In 2014, the siblings placed ninth in their first Olympics in Sochi and are heavily favored to earn a spot on the podium next month in PyeongChang.
After a dazzling short dance where Alex and Maia showcased their signature “twizzle” move, they debuted a revamped free dance program. During the routine, the Shib Sibs showed that no matter what, they literally pull each other up. At one point during the routine, Maia’s skate caught the edge of the ice, causing her to stumble. But the slip was barely noticeable because Alex pulled her up and whisked her back into position to finish out the program. Their hard work and practice paid off with a well-deserved silver medal.
